Munroe Bergdorf International Social Activist & Trans Model Q&A

November 21, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

The Oxford Guild is delighted to welcome a very special, high profile and unique guest for what will be one of the interesting, topical and exciting events of the year – Munroe Bergdorf, International Social Activist, Model, DJ and the first transgender model to be selected for a UK beauty campaign. Munroe Bergdorf will be speaking in a specially organised event on Tuesday 21st November (7th week) from 5.30pm in Oxford University’s Wadham College’s Moser Theatre. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL – REGISTER HERE ASAP FOR YOUR PLACE: https://tinyurl.com/MunroeBergdorfOxfordGuild Munroe has sparked many debates in recent months in the global media about gender, race, sexuality and diversity, attracting major international coverage. This will undoubtedly be one of the most fascinating and topical events of the year giving you the chance to hear from and ask questions of such an interesting and high profile guest – do not miss out on your seat!

Best known for channelling her unique blend of honesty and openness, the transgender model is making waves as one of the only influencers raising awareness of social issues that are affecting thousands of people across the world today. Munroe will be sharing her own life experiences as well as talking about sensitive subjects and topics some perceive as ‘taboo’; challenging stereotypes on gender, race, diversity and sexuality. The timing is excellent as these are very pressing issues in 2017 and she has received a lot of press coverage in recent months and sparked debates about these issues as well as around the fashion industry, companies like L’Oreal and diversity. Munroe’s true passion lies in her charity involvements, sharing her story and extending her hand of friendship and support amongst communities. Her mission is to inspire young people to overcome adversity and challenges. Munroe was the first transgender model to be selected for a UK beauty campaign, which was intended to represent diversity. Her story became global news when she spoke out on racism to only then be dropped by the brand for speaking about the topic. This triggered a worldwide debate about systemic racism, equality and also questioned brands intentions for selecting models based on ‘tokenism’. She faced horrendous racial and transphobic abuse online, and she has since used her platform to speak out about racism and issues facing trans women. Munroe has also fronted a national campaign for Uniqlo ‘This Way To Utopia’ and has recently shot the Christmas campaign for the inclusive beauty brand, Illamasqua, which will launch in November 2017. Munroe currently features on Huffington Post and AOL’s new online series, New Activists, available to watch weekdays at 4pm. The docu-reality show follows the daily lives of 5 prominent activists based in the UK on the frontline of their campaigning. 2018 sees Munroe explore new opportunities such as documentaries and presenting, investigating global issues, with other projects to be announced soon.

Munroe Bergdorf is a fascinating and talented public speaker who is very passionate. This will be a very interactive event with the opportunity for you to ask questions and it promises to be a very exciting evening. If you would like to ballot for the chance to meet Munroe and speak to her directly and take photos in a private reception before the event please email president@theoxfordguild.com ASAP.

The event will also serve as special keynote event for the Guild’s Infinity Speakers Series, a unique and special speaker series embracing diversity and targeted at encouraging women, LGBTQ people and ethnic minorities to believe that they can succeed in any occupation they choose, and making sure that they have positive role models to which they can aspire. This is part of a wider drive to promote diversity and inclusion amongst students and society in general. In the wake of a recent surge in racial tensions and divisive policies, we are fighting back against discrimination and striving to create a positive culture of belief that students can do anything they want to, regardless of their gender, sexuality, ethnicity or background. This is something that we really want to bring into focus, in Oxford and across the country and world, to ensure that everybody feels able to pursue their dreams. The Oxford Guild is an organisation committed to levelling the playing field when it comes to students’ opportunities in life, and this is something we hold as a core value throughout anything we do. This initiative is our latest in a series of activities pursued to encourage inclusion and equality and something we are excited to have launched earlier this year in our 120thanniversary year.
