Introduction to Fintech and Fintech Careers

January 16, 2018 @ 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm

For those who joined the workforce 20, 30, or 40 years ago, their career in finance was more or less predictable. The concept of a linear career was the norm rather than the exception. But for today’s young professionals, a linear career seems a bit uncertain. With the acceleration of technology and digital transformation, it seems inevitable that some jobs will disappear. However, one should not underestimate the opportunities brought about by technology in the field, like in the case of Fintech where we can anticipate exciting prospects. So how will the finance world and finance jobs look like in the future? Where are the career opportunities?

To answer these questions, the Oxford Fintech & SmartLaw Society has invited two experts, David L. Shrier (Oxford, MIT) and Tram Anh Nguyen (CFTE), who will introduce the general trends and career opportunities across different areas of the fintech ecosystem. David will provide an overview of the ecosystem, followed by Tram Anh sharing her views and experiences and what were the reasons behind setting up CFTE, an education platform for Finance 2.0.

The Speakers

David L. Shrier is a futurist, author, entrepreneur and CEO at Distilled Analytics. He has driven over $8.5 billion of growth initiatives for various Fortune 1000 companies, and has served as CEO or COO/CFO for 6 privately-funded companies. He originated and leads the ‘Oxford Fintech’ and ‘Oxford Blockchain Strategy’ classes for the Said Business School, and teaches courses and workshops for MIT such as ‘Future Commerce’, ‘Data Academy’, ‘Inspiring Change’, and ‘Big Data and Social Analytics’.

Tram Anh Nguyen is the co-founder of CFTE, The Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship. She started her career on a trading floor in New York where she was a trader and main market maker for Standard Chartered. She then moved to Dresdner Kleinwort London before joining UBS Wealth Management where she worked with UHNW families. She has navigated between the corporate and entrepreneurial world, and knows the excitement and challenges of entrepreneurship. She is a strong believer in the importance of lifelong learning and co-founded CFTE to bring the worlds of finance and technology together, and help individuals acquire the new skills of Finance 2.0.
