This will undoubtedly be one of the most fascinating and topical events of the year giving you the chance to hear from and ask questions of such an interesting and high profile guest – do not miss out on your seat! He became widely known in the first half of 2015 when, as Minister of Finance of the newly formed Greek government, he was a leading, outspoken and much-discussed figure in the renegotiations of Greece’s debt. In the January 2015 General Election, he was elected to the Greek Parliament, representing Syriza, and took office in the new government of Alexis Tsipras two days later. He resigned from the Ministry of Finance on 6 July 2015, the day after a no-vote on the referendum on austerity. His resignation was widely touted as a condition to securing further bailout money from EU states. Last year he launched the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25). Varoufakis is the author of several books on the European debt crisis, the financial imbalance in the world and game theory. He is also a highly recognised speaker and often appears as an analyst for national news media. His latest works including ‘Adults in the Room: My Battle with Europe’s Deep Establishment’ and ‘Talking to My Daughter About the Economy’. Yanis Varoufakis describes himself as a ‘libertarian Marxist,’ although, he says, “It is not something that I volunteer to talk about much, because the very mention of Marx switches audiences off.” He teaches economic theory at the University of Athens, where he challenges mainstream notions — arguing that after the financial crash of 2008 we need a radically new way of thinking about the economy, finance and capitalism.

This will be a very interactive event with the opportunity for you to ask questions and it promises to be a very exciting evening. If you would like to ballot for the chance to meet Mr Varoufakis and speak to him directly and take photos in a private reception at the end of the event or dinner please email president@theoxfordguild.com ASAP.

The event is 100% FREE & OPEN TO ALL! DO NOT MISS OUT ON WHAT PROMISES TO BE A HIGHLY INTERESTING, INSIGHTFUL AND EXCITING TALK AND OCCASION FROM SUCH A FASCINATING FIGURE!
